I began coloring when I was very young. My mom and I would get huge pieces of paper and sit and color together on the same page for hours and hours.
When I was twelve, our family opened an import store in St Petersburg, Florida. One day, a local shopkeeper, Christy Faris, brought me some tiny canvases and acrylic paints. She sat with me on the floor of our shop and held and rotated those canvases while I held the brush and I was able to create my first paintings! I loved it so much we bought bigger canvases and more paints and brushes. Then another artist, Mary Long, moved into the store next to us and she taught me to paint on large canvases. When I attended a homeschool co-op, Ms. Ping was my art teacher and I loved learning new things from her. I also worked with Vanessa Montenegro, a local artist in Tampa. My passion to paint has never faded. When I got my iPad, I started using different apps to make colorful designs. This gives me greater freedom to create completely independently. I mostly paint sitting on the floor in front of our sliding glass door looking out at our back yard, but I love to paint outside with the colors and feeling of nature around me. I love listening to music as I paint!
I mostly use acryllic on canvas. I like to experiment with different techniques and textures. Sometimes I love to add sand and paper that I learned to make from dryer lint.
I love expressing myself creatively and painting is a way I can do this freely. I have always loved bright colors and in our store I am surrounded by them because we carry mostly Nepali things.
I love spending time in water. When I am at the beach or in a pool I am free from the restrictions imposed upon my body from cerebral palsy. I feel like this freedom comes out in my work!
My name is Ruby. I’m an artist in Tampa, Florida. I have CP (cerebral palsy) which can be challenging sometimes, but I choose to look for ways to have a life without limits. I have found ways to do so with my artwork and my writing. I do abstract art and I write a lot of poetry and songs. I think expressing ourselves through any form of art is one of the best ways to let the world know who we are! I also love music and listen when I paint. Music lifts my soul.
I am an artist who has had to overcome fine and gross motor limitations in order to express myself creatively.
I am working on getting new products that feature my artwork! Stay tuned!
When you buy my artwork you are supporting a business independently owned and operated by a uniquely able woman artist!
The colors you have chosen and the boldness and confidence you show in your brushwork excites me! I enjoy and feel your painting comes from your heart, Ruby.
